Labour schemes drawing nurses from across Pacific to lower-qualified aged care jobs in Australia, New Zealand
Stephen Howes was asked by ABC Pacific Beat about “brain drain” concerns with over-qualified Pacific Island nurses taking aged care jobs in countries such as Australia.
While it has historically been difficult for Pacific nurses to get Australian visas, they can now apply under PALM to work in an aged care home, not as a nurse but as a lower-paid personal carer.
“It’s a challenge that needs to be met by careful management,” said Howes.
