Papua New Guinea population could hit 17 million
Stephen Howes spoke to Angus Randall on ABC News The World Today about the controversial UN Population Study of Papua New Guinea.
The study, using satellite data, puts the population of Papua New Guinea at 17 million – much higher than the 9 million claimed in the 2011 national census.
Howes said that the accuracy of the findings can’t be assessed until the report is published. He would rather the Australian Government prioritise work with the PNG Government to ensure that the next national census in 2023 is reliable.
